Those who live in better houses and localities know in a vague and general way that slums exist, that the poor occupy dwellings not.

Inthe Irish Press newspaper launched a major exposé of the Dublin slum problem, with articles and photographs from the slums of Dublin designed to highlight the appalling conditions many Dubliners were living in. The articles and photos sparked real discussion on living conditions at the time, and the newspaper collected some priceless oral.

There's a very interesting conversation to be had about slum clearance in independent Ireland, particularly in Dublin, in the early decades of the state. The city's Georgian core, particularly on its northside had degenerated by the early 20th century into notorious slums.

There was also a critical housing shortage. The Tenements was an ambitious four-part series about Dublin’s notorious inner-city slums.
